چکیده

A computational model for the control of horizontal vergence, based on a population of disparity tuned complex cells, is presented. Since the population is able to extract the disparity map only in a limited range, using the map to drive vergence control means to limit its functionality inside this range. The model directly extracts the disparity-vergence response by combining the outputs of the disparity detectors without explicit calculation of the disparity map. The resulting vergence control yields to stable fixation and has small response time to a wide range of disparities. Experimental simulations with synthetic stimuli in depth validated the approach. & 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modelling Short-Latency Disparity-Vergence Eye Movements Under Dichoptic Unbalanced Stimulation

Vergence eye movements align the optical axes of our two eyes onto an object of interest, thus facilitating the binocular summation of the images projected onto the left and the right retinae into a single percept. Both the computational substrate and the functional behaviour of binocular vergence eye movements have been the topic of in depth investigation. Here, we attempt to bring together wh...

On the road to invariant object recognition: How cortical area V2 transforms absolute to relative disparity during 3D vision

Invariant recognition of objects depends on a hierarchy of cortical stages that build invariance gradually. Binocular disparity computations are a key part of this transformation. Cortical area V1 computes absolute disparity, which is the horizontal difference in retinal location of an image in the left and right foveas. Many cells in cortical area V2 compute relative disparity, which is the di...

The effect of target size and eccentricity on reflex disparity vergence

This study examined the effects of stimulus size and eccentricity on reflex disparity vergence: the small, involuntary corrections of eye alignment which serve to minimize the binocular disparity of fixated targets. Subjects were instructed to fixate steadily on a small, stationary mark superimposed on the center of a dynamic random dot stereogram. The stereogram was binocularly uncorrelated ex...

Vergence Dynamics Predict Fixation Disparity

The neural origin of the steady-state vergence eye movement error, called binocular fixation disparity, is not well understood. Further, there has been no study that quantitatively relates the dynamics of the vergence system to its steady-state behavior, a critical test for the understanding of any oculomotor system. We investigate whether fixation disparity can be related to the dynamics of op...
